A prescription is required in the relevant situations, but coverage also depends on your entitlements and French health insurance conditions. Check your eligibility before the journey.
Which documents should I prepare?+
Your transport prescription, Carte Vitale and an up-to-date certificate of entitlement. Depending on your situation, prior approval and supplementary insurance details may be needed.
Can the outward and return journeys be arranged?+
Yes. Specify both journeys when booking. If the discharge time is unknown, return arrangements are agreed with you subject to availability.
Is this an ambulance?+
No. A health insurance-approved taxi provides professional seated medical transport. Your doctor decides the appropriate mode of transport. For a medical emergency, call 15 or 112.
Can a relative come with me?+
Mention this in your request so we can check available seats and applicable conditions. Coverage for a companion is not automatic.
Can transport be shared?+
Yes, depending on the prescription and applicable rules. Shared transport may be offered if there is no medical contraindication. Refusal may affect direct billing depending on your circumstances.
YOUR PAPERWORK / STEP BY STEP
Before booking, the right steps.
1. Talk to your doctor
Your doctor determines whether your health requires transport and selects the appropriate mode. Except in emergencies, the prescription is issued before the journey. A health insurance-approved taxi provides professional seated medical transport.
2. Check your eligibility
A prescription alone does not guarantee reimbursement. Your entitlements and the reason for travel must meet French health insurance conditions. An ordinary consultation does not automatically qualify for coverage.
3. Arrange departure from Allauch
Prepare the neighbourhood, address, destination and appointment time. Specify return travel, access constraints and assistance needs, without sending a diagnosis in an initial message.

Reimbursement and direct billing. Two different concepts.
Reimbursement
As a general rule, French health insurance reimburses 55% of the agreed fare when the conditions are met. Some circumstances qualify for 100%. Any remaining amount depends on your entitlements and supplementary insurance.
Upfront payment
Direct billing can, depending on eligibility, remove all or part of the need to pay upfront. It does not automatically mean there is no amount left for you to pay.
The medical deductible
A €4 deductible per journey may apply, subject to caps and exemptions. A return trip counts as two journeys. Your health insurance fund confirms the rules applicable to you.
In particular, for one-way journeys over 150 km, or at least 4 journeys of over 50 km one way within 2 months for the same treatment, except certain series linked to a long-term condition (ALD). Other situations also apply: check with your doctor.
Your doctor completes form S3139. Send the required sections to your health insurance fund's medical department before transport. No reply within 15 days of sending counts as approval; medically certified emergencies follow specific procedures.
Shared transport may be offered according to the prescription and if there is no medical contraindication. For some regular care, refusing it may require full upfront payment before reimbursement. Recipients of Complémentaire santé solidaire and AME are exempt from this measure.
Tell your doctor about your needs: they assess any contraindications. The arrangements are then agreed with the transport provider.
